LANDesk offers a range of software products, including tools for desktop management and security. The company has partnerships with several big PC makers including Lenovo Group. It was once part of Intel, which span it out into a separate company in 2002.

The LANDesk acquisition follows the Avocent's purchase of Cyclades earlier this year. Cyclades is specialized in Linux-based management tools.

On Thursday, Avocent said greater sales and improved margins helped drive a sharp rise in the company's first-quarter earnings. Net income in the first quarter ending March 31 increased to $12.9 million, or $0.26 per share, from $1.8 million, or $0.04 per share, in the same period a year earlier. Net sales increased to $94.5 million from $76.8 million a year earlier.
